Council Passes Resolutions on Abatement and a Grant Application

Two weeks after giving preliminary approval, the Vincennes City Council has now approved a five-year tax abatement for Ewing Printing on about $800,000 in new printing equipment.

A public hearing was held before the meeting to allow comments on the abatement request, but no one from the public spoke. The resolution then passed on a 6–1 vote, with Ryan Lough voting no.

Earlier discussions centered on upcoming changes to Indiana’s business personal property tax threshold and uncertainty over whether the new $2 million limit applies to equipment cost or assessed value. An Ewing representative had told the council the company was advised the threshold applies to cost, meaning the tax could still apply without an abatement in place.

City officials previously described the move as a safeguard to keep the business competitive.

The Vincennes City Council has also approved a resolution allowing the city to pursue state funding for renovations to the Gregg Park Bandshell.

The council’s action clears the way for a grant application that, if successful, would help refurbish the 90-year-old structure.

City officials are also asking residents to complete a brief survey to guide the application. The survey asks which parks you use, what amenities you rely on, whether you attend Bandshell events, and whether you view the Bandshell as a historically significant landmark. It also asks if you would attend events at an updated outdoor venue.

A link to the survey can be found on the Mayor’s Facebook page.
