Several Knox County fire departments assisted in fighting a large structure fire in Lyons that left five buildings a total loss.

The Bicknell Fire Department provided tanker support to the Lyons Volunteer Fire Department on Thursday, with Tanker 18 helping supply water, coordinate tanker resources, and track water usage on scene. Sandborn Fire Department also assisted, along with Edwardsport Fire Department and Vigo Township Fire Department.

Crews from the Lyons and Linton Fire Departments were first called to the fire around 8 Wednesday night near State Road 67 and Wine Street. Firefighters battled the blaze for several hours and were called back to the scene around 4 Thursday morning after the fire rekindled.

Fire officials say the five buildings have been ruled a complete loss. Investigators believe the fire may have started due to an electrical issue. No injuries have been reported.

Lyons Fire Department officials say about 15 departments and roughly 60 firefighters were on scene as crews worked the fire and monitored hotspots that are expected to continue burning for several days.

Food and drinks were delivered throughout the past 24 hours as residents and local businesses stepped up to support first responders working long hours at the scene.

Fire officials say while several buildings — including pieces of town history — were lost and a few families were displaced, everyone made it out safely.

Lyons Fire Department President Robby Hamm says it’s been a difficult stretch for the department, with several major fires and serious medical runs in recent weeks, but says crews will continue to respond as the community depends on them.
