An exhibition exploring African identity and contemporary social issues is now on display at the Shircliff Gallery of Art at Vincennes University. The exhibit opened late last week, with an artist’s reception attended by university members and community members.
Vincent “Sniper” Frimpong, a contemporary ceramic artist born in Accra, Ghana, uses his work to address themes of African identity, colonialism, consumerism, and imperialism. By reassembling waste from the Western world—such as tech waste and used clothing—he creates pieces that reflect the effects of Western practices on Africa.
Frimpong’s unique approach seeks to re-contextualize these objects. He shared in an interview, “I am here to share the Ghanaian experience. I am here to share what it means to be an African. I am here to share my experience with everybody. So I know that some people might just look at the aesthetic qualities, but I am more interested in how these pieces came to be and how I am trying to initiate a new conversation through what I’m making.”
The exhibit is open through March 21st. The gallery is available for viewing Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., by appointment.
