A tragic weekend in the First City News coverage area as three people died in separate incidents.

The Indiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR) investigated two deaths in Greene County on Saturday, both stemming from incidents on frozen lakes. At 1:17 p.m. that afternoon emergency crews recovered the body of 83-year-old Louis W. White from a private lake near Sassafras Road in Bloomfield. Authorities were called after footprints were found leading to a hole in the ice. Divers found White in 14 feet of water.

Later that evening, two men fell through the ice on Beaver Dam Lake in the Hillenbrand Fish and Wildlife Area. While 20-year-old Cordell A. Foster was rescued by Jasonville Police, 20-year-old Justin D. Sprang went under the ice and did not resurface. Divers recovered his body from 16 feet of water at 8:21 p.m.. Multiple agencies, including local police, fire departments, EMS, and the Greene County Coroner’s Office, assisted in both incidents.

In another incident, a single-vehicle crash in Daviess County claimed the life of 17-year-old John “JD” Moore. His mother reported him missing at 3 a.m. Saturday morning after he failed to return home. Hours later, JD’s father found his vehicle overturned in a water-filled ditch on County Road 1100 East. First responders arrived and pronounced him dead at the scene. Investigators say his car left the road, struck a fence and guardrail, and then flipped into the stream.
