A local auto dealer has an initial hearing in about 30 days in connection with a fraud and forgery case involving his auto dealership.

James M. Banks was arrested April 29 by the Knox County Sheriff’s Department and is facing multiple felony charges. The arrest follows a months-long investigation by state officials into activities at his business, which operated south of Vincennes near U.S. 41.

Authorities say the case involves questionable documents submitted to the Bureau of Motor Vehicles, including the unauthorized use of signatures on official forms. Some of those documents were connected to law enforcement inspections, and investigators say the signatures may not have been genuine.

Banks was released on bond following his arrest. His initial court appearance is scheduled for June 2 in Knox Circuit Court.

The dealership is no longer in operation. Earlier this month, state regulators revoked its license and prohibited its owners from running any similar business in Indiana.
