Vincennes drivers are maneuvering through and around road construction as several major projects are underway across the city.
Mayor Joe Yochum stopped by our studios this week, giving us a rundown of all the projects. He updated us saying that downtown Main Street is being upgraded with new curb ramps, and paving will follow before the end of June. A full closure is planned between 6th and 7th Streets, where crews will remove buried trolley ties. Main Street will also be reduced to a single lane in the downtown area as part of that project to improve traffic safety.
Mayor Yochum says the most disruptive project right now is an Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) effort affecting both Willow Street (U.S. 41 Business) and the Vigo Street area.
“6th Street has been closed for a couple of weeks,” Yochum explained. “Crews discovered old concrete beneath the asphalt. They initially planned to make spot repairs, but the base was in such poor condition they had to remove all of it.”
Once that section reopens, Yochum says closures are expected either along Willow from Sixth to 13th or along Vigo Street between Sixth and the Memorial Bridge. The goal is to finish all work by the end of July, however, the Mayor says roads should be open for the Spirit of Vincennes Rendezvous on Memorial Day weekend.
