Indiana officials are warning residents about a phishing scam involving fake emails and text messages claiming they owe money for unpaid tolls. The messages appear to come from legitimate addresses tied to the Indiana Department of Transportation, Family and Social Services Agency, Indiana Department of Homeland Security and other state agencies. However, the payment requests are not real.
The emails and texts often reference unpaid tolls or the TxTag tolling system and include links prompting users to pay. State officials advise residents not to click the link and to delete the message immediately. Reports of the scam can be submitted to the Federal Trade Commission at reportfraud.ftc.gov or to the Internet Crime Complaint Center at ic3.gov
The Indiana Office of Technology is currently working to resolve the issue. INDOT reminds the public that it does not send text or email messages related to toll payments.
