A report is due out soon on a recent study in Knox County on food insecurity.
The Knox County Health Department partnered with Indiana University’s O’Neill School to assess how well local food pantries are meeting community needs. The study found that while Knox County has a good number of food pantries, areas like Decker and parts of Widner Township lack adequate access. Transportation, evening hours, and an aging volunteer base were also noted as challenges.
Knox County Community Health Nurse Susan Yochum says the study recommends forming a food council to improve coordination and access. “We’re hoping to take some of their suggestions and move forward with this.” she said.
Yochum adds that the number of people needing help may rise this summer due to the state’s decision not to participate in the Sun Bucks food program for children.
The final report is expected in the coming weeks.
