Animal shelters across southwestern Indiana are stepping up after nearly 90 dogs were surrendered from a single household in Pike County.

The dogs were taken from a home in Winslow recently and are now being cared for at several shelters, including the one in Vincennes. Director Leah Reagan says the dogs are still on medical hold but can be seen by potential adopters. That hold is expected to end later this week. She also says some of the dogs have heartworm, and donations are needed to help cover treatment costs.

Meanwhile the Vincennes facility  continues to operate at full capacity and is in need of both volunteers as well a donations. Community members are encouraged to help with walking, bathing, and socializing dogs, as well as donating essential items like food, litter, and cleaning supplies.
