A man has died after being shot during an altercation in rural Sullivan County early Thursday morning.

According to Indiana State Police, officers responded to a 911 call around 1 a.m. reporting a gunshot victim near the 800 North block of Shelburn. When officers arrived, they found 30-year-old Ryan Gehring of Prairieton with a gunshot wound.

Investigators say Gehring was trespassing on private property and had been told several times to leave. A physical confrontation took place between Gehring and the property owner, which ended with Gehring being shot.

Gehring was treated at the scene, transported to a local hospital, and later flown to Indianapolis by air ambulance, where he died from his injuries.

An autopsy is scheduled for July 13.

The case remains under investigation by Indiana State Police, with assistance from the Sullivan County Sheriff’s Department and the Sullivan County Coroner’s Office.

There was no mention of an arrest or the name of the alleged shooter.
