The Vincennes City Council has approved a new ordinance increasing fees for residential and handicapped parking signs.
The measure raises the initial cost of a sign to $200 and the annual renewal fee to $50 starting next year. Officials say the fee hike is needed to cover rising costs and improve accountability.
The ordinance also requires updated documentation from a physician to verify continued need for handicapped spaces. It also clarifies that residential signs are only available to those without off-street parking.
Although concerns were raised about affordability for disabled residents, no hardship exemption was included in the ordinance. The council acknowledged that such issues could be considered later
City Inspector Brad Snider says an inventory found more than 160 signs around town—many of which may no longer be valid. The additional revenue from the updated fees will help cover the cost of removing signs that are no longer needed.
The measure passed unanimously on final reading,
