Indiana State Police were busy over the Labor Day Weekend with two separate incidents in Knox County.
On Friday night, troopers attempted to stop a black Jeep on State Road 550 after the driver disregarded a traffic light at the intersection with State Road 67. The driver, identified as 40-year-old Ian Stewart of Washington, showed signs of impairment and refused to exit the vehicle. When officers tried to remove him, Stewart fled south on State Road 67 before driving into a bean field. After setting up a perimeter and ordering him out, Stewart eventually surrendered and was arrested. Officers recovered syringes containing a dark liquid and a loaded 9mm magazine from his vehicle. Toxicology results are pending, and Stewart was booked into the Knox County Jail.
On Sunday morning, troopers arrested 32-year-old Mark Joseph of Washington in Vincennes. He was stopped for expired registration near 6th Street and Saint Clair Avenue. Two children under the age of 8 were in the back seat of the vehicle. Joseph showed signs of impairment, failed field sobriety tests, and refused to cooperate after being taken into custody. The children’s mother arranged a ride home, and troopers say additional charges against her are possible.
Both cases remain under investigation. The Knox County Sheriff’s Office assisted in each incident.
