Local and federal officials said Sunday that testing has not detected hazardous materials in the air around Newburgh following a chemical fire at the PBTT Corp. plant.

The fire began Saturday afternoon and burned into early Sunday morning, leading to multiple shelter-in-place orders.

According to the Evansville Courier and Press, the Warrick County Health Department reported that ash from the fire may be “very caustic” and could be harmful if touched or inhaled. Officials are considering a local disaster declaration and a public health emergency. Ohio Township Fire Chief Scott Forman also said contaminated water runoff could cause a fish kill at Vann Park Pond.

The Warrick County School Corp. announced that schools would open Monday, but all outdoor activities, including recess, were cancelled.
