The United Way of Knox County’s Days of Caring got underway Thursday with more than 500 volunteers serving across the community.

Executive Director Scott Charleston said the opening day really showed the difference volunteers can make at local nonprofits. “Things have been absolutely wonderful. We have a lot of great organizations out doing some wonderful things in the community.” Charleston said.

He noted that the event helps organizations tackle projects that often go unfinished. “This gives them an opportunity to get projects done that they are not normally able to get done, whether through just manpower or financial. And this is one way they are able to complete those projects,” Charleston explained.

Along with work at service sites, volunteers are collecting non-perishable food at grocery stores in Vincennes, Bicknell, and Oaktown. Donations will benefit food pantries throughout Knox County.

The two-day effort continues with more projects and food drives planned today.
