The Vincennes City Council delayed final action Monday night on an ordinance that would prohibit residential living on the first floor of buildings in the downtown business district.

Council members explained delay allows time to notify all affected property owners between First and Sixth Streets, and to hold a public hearing before any final decision is made.

The public hearing has been scheduled for the council’s October 15 meeting.

In other business, the council heard from Tree Board spokesperson Dennis Kordes, who outlined a plan to apply for a state urban forestry grant. The proposal would establish a grove of white oak trees as part of the city’s plans to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the U.S. in 2026.  Kordes said the project would help address a statewide shortage of white oak while leaving a lasting legacy for future generations.

If plans come to fruition, Kordes said the grove could be planted in a location expected to endure for centuries, such as Greg Park or the Rendezvous grounds. White oaks typically live 250 to 300 years.

The council approved Kordes’ request to pursue the grant.
