The Vincennes/Knox County Visitors and Tourism Bureau held an event Tuesday evening for the community to see what will be sealed inside a new time capsule.

Bureau Executive Director, Janice Barniak said the idea grew during planning for the 2024 eclipse, when local leaders wanted to preserve more than just a one-day event.

The collection includes items from the 2024 solar eclipse and much more. “We collected letters from ten families, who had newborn babies, with the hope that it would be wonderful to be 75 years old and open a letter you’ve never seen from your mother. “she said.  “We just thought that would be very special.”

There may still be time to get something into the capsule it you could not attend Tuesday’s event.  You can contact the visitors bureau in person or by email for more information.

Barniak credited community members, the city of Vincennes and local teacher Norb Brown for helping curate the collection.

The capsule will be buried at Minooteeni Park in the coming days. Organizers chose the site to connect Knox County’s Native American heritage with its future, and to ensure the capsule remains accessible on public land.
