Officials on Friday carried out an execution of a state prisoner for raping and murdering a teenage girl in 2001.
According to corrections officials, Roy Lee Ward died by lethal injection just after 12:30 a.m. Central Time at the Indiana State Prison in Michigan City.
Afterward, an attorney for Ward read a statement saying that if his execution helped the victim’s family, “that is what he wants.”
Ward raped and murdered 15-year-old Stacy Payne in 2001 in Spencer County.
He dropped two lawsuits challenging the execution earlier this week, and Governor Mike Braun denied him clemency in late September.
The execution was the third in Indiana in less than a year. The state lifted a 15-year moratorium after obtaining a necessary drug last summer.
