Shutdown Threatens Local Head Start Program

The ongoing federal government shutdown is putting hundreds of local children and families at risk, according to Pace Community Action Agency.
Pace’s Head Start program serves 263 children across Knox, Daviess, Greene, and Sullivan counties. The organization warns that without federal funding, services could be reduced or halted after November 1.

Head Start provides early education, health screenings, nutritious meals, and social services to families at no cost. More than 90 percent of the children enrolled live below the federal poverty line, and many face additional challenges such as disabilities or experiences of abuse and neglect.

Pace CEO Tai Blythe said the agency is doing everything possible to keep classrooms open but can’t sustain operations without federal support. Around 80 local staff members are also at risk of losing their income if the funding lapse continues.

Pace Head Start Director Angie Lange said the program is seeking ways to cut costs and accept donations to continue services for children through age five.
Community members who wish to help can donate online or send contributions to Pace CAA, 525 N. 4th Street, Vincennes, IN 47591.
