Heavy Traveling for Thanksgiving

Holiday travel is ramping up.

Triple A expects 73 million Americans to travel for Thanksgiving, including nearly 2 million Hoosiers. And INDOT says the roads will get busier starting Tuesday afternoon.

INDOT Commissioner Lyndsay Quist says motorists should expect delays and give themselves extra time as traffic begins to build. Beginning at noon Wednesday, INDOT will lift certain short-term road closures and restrictions where it’s safe, but longer-term construction zones will stay in place.

Drivers can check 511in.org or the TrafficWise app for real-time updates, cameras, and current closures.

Officials are also pushing two key safety reminders: buckle up and put the phone down. While fewer than seven percent of Indiana drivers skip seatbelts, they make up 45 percent of passenger-car fatalities.

And with holiday celebrations ahead, INDOT and federal safety officials say never drive impaired. More than 850 people have died in drunk-driving crashes during the Thanksgiving period in recent years. They’re urging Hoosiers to plan ahead—use a rideshare, a designated driver, or public transit—to make sure everyone gets home safely.
