The mayor of Jasper has announced he will step down later this year.

Mayor Dean Vonderheide says he plans to resign effective March 31, 2026, after serving the city for more than seven years.

In a letter to residents, Vonderheide said he first took office in 2018 and later committed to serving a full term. He noted that while major projects and priorities remain, he believes it is time to pass leadership to others who can guide the city into the future.

The mayor cited a desire to spend more time with family and to reduce work commitments to focus on his health. He said the decision has the support of his doctor, friends, and colleagues.

Vonderheide says he plans to remain involved in the community after leaving office.

City officials say the resignation timeline allows time for a smooth transition and the selection of Jasper’s next mayor.
