It was 45 years ago this week that investigators were still in the early stages of a Sullivan County murder case that remains unsolved today.

Authorities continue to ask for the public’s help in the 1981 killing of 51-year-old Sarah “Jeanette” Benson of Farmersburg.

Investigators say on the evening of January 2, 1981, Benson returned home from a shopping trip to Terre Haute and surprised someone who was already inside her home. She was later found murdered.

Neighbors reported seeing a blue sedan pull into the driveway shortly before Benson arrived. One witness described the car as a robin-egg blue, possibly an older Plymouth Valiant. Another believed it may have been a General Motors vehicle with shiny blue paint.

A neighbor also reported seeing a white male get out of the car and knock on the front door. He was described as tall and thin, possibly in his 20s at the time. Investigators believe that man may be responsible. Today, he would likely be in his 60s.

Despite years of investigation, no arrest has been made. Authorities say they hope renewed attention could jog someone’s memory.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office or Indiana State Police.
