Indiana lawmakers returned to the Statehouse on Monday for the second half of the legislative session, following a contentious start in December centered on redistricting.

Democrats in both chambers announced priorities focused on cost-of-living issues as the shorter session gets underway. With limited time, committees are expected to meet only a handful of times, placing pressure on lawmakers to move bills quickly.

House Minority Leader Phil GiaQuinta said his caucus plans to focus on the cost of utilities, health care, housing, and child care. He said lawmakers are ready to move past redistricting and shift attention to financial concerns facing Hoosiers.

Republican Matt Lehman said working families remain a common priority across party lines, noting that many Hoosiers are focused on keeping more of their paycheck as they head to work each day.

Lawmakers say they hope to wrap up the session by late February.
