Added support for people with medical debt could soon become law in Indiana.

A bill moving through the statehouse would set new rules aimed at protecting patients and improving access to payment options.

Medical debt in Indiana is estimated at more than two billion dollars, with about one in five residents having debt in collections.

The measure would require hospitals to offer payment plans to patients who meet certain income guidelines and make sure those options are clearly communicated.

The bill would also prohibit hospitals from placing liens on a person’s home because of unpaid medical bills.

The proposal has drawn bipartisan support after similar efforts stalled in previous years.
