Teen Death Sparks New Legislation on Missing Kids

State lawmakers are moving to create a new emergency notification system following the recent disappearance and death of 17-year-old Hailey Buzbee of Fishers.

The proposed legislation, referred to as “Hailey’s Law,” would establish a “pink alert” for missing children. Unlike the criteria for an Amber Alert, a pink alert would be activated in cases where there is evidence of child grooming or concerns regarding human trafficking.

House Speaker Todd Houston stated that lawmakers have identified opportunities to insert the new language into bills currently moving through the Statehouse. The goal is to clarify the state’s alert system protocols before the current session ends.

While there is bipartisan support for taking action, Senate Democrats have expressed concerns regarding the legislative timeline, urging colleagues to prioritize the measure immediately.

The Indiana General Assembly is expected to conclude its session by the end of February.
