The wellbeing of children in Indiana has improved, according to a new statewide assessment.

The annual Kids Count Data Book measures youth outcomes in areas including health, education, and family economic factors. Indiana’s overall national ranking moved from 27th to 25th this year, with gains reported in several categories.

Indiana has historically ranked lower in child health, but the latest report shows improvement. Indiana Youth Institute President and CEO Tami Silverman says new mental-health indicators are a factor.

She says the number of children who report feeling persistently sad or hopeless declined by a significant margin.

The report also shows Indiana’s education ranking rising from 17th to 11th, with increases in reading proficiency and high-school graduation rates.

The Indiana Youth Institute plans to present the findings at events across the state.
