Good Samaritan Hospital’s Breast Care Center has upgraded its three-D mammography equipment with new imaging units now in service.

The hospital has provided three-D mammography for more than ten years.Mammography Manager Crystal Beadles says the latest system produces higher-resolution images and is designed to make exams more comfortable for patients.

The technology captures multiple views of the breast and creates layered images for radiologists to examine.Beadles says that allows cancer to be detected more accurately.

Hospital officials say the imaging can also improve evaluation of dense breast tissue, which is found in nearly half of women over the age of forty.

The units include updated image-processing and computer-assisted review software.According to the hospital, that supports faster image interpretation.

The new equipment also uses curved compression paddles that are shaped to follow the natural contour of the breast during screening.

The project was funded through cancer initiative fundraising by the Good Samaritan Hospital Foundation and community donors.
