Police in Washington responded to a report of an armed and possibly suicidal man at Eastside Park Tuesday evening.

Central Dispatch received the call at approximately 6:35 p.m. Officers found the man inside a vehicle and attempted to speak with him, but he did not respond. Dispatchers later reached him by phone, and he remained in the vehicle.

Authorities closed the park and blocked off the surrounding area. Additional units from the Washington Police Emergency Response Team, the Daviess County Sheriff’s Office Special Response Unit, Indiana State Police, Washington City Fire, and DCH EMS were called to the scene.

After about three hours, the man discarded a firearm from the vehicle and got out. EMS evaluated him at the scene.

No injuries were reported. The man’s name was not released.
