The historic Palace Lodge building in Winslow is coming down according to posts from Winslow Town Board members on social media.

Board members said the town council voted Monday night to move forward with the work. The plan calls for pushing in the portion of the structure that previously collapsed so State Road 61 can fully reopen through town. They said there are no plans to remove other buildings on the block, although additional structural failures are possible when demolition begins.

The building partially collapsed during the overnight hours of November 13. After the collapse, streets in the area were closed and traffic was detoured for several weeks. When the roadway reopened, a temporary traffic signal was installed to control traffic along State Road 61.

Town officials said the excavation cost is quoted at less than six thousand dollars. They said the town will pay for the work and bill the property owner, and that the town is not taking ownership of the site. A lien can be placed on the property to recover the expense.

According to the board members’ posts, the site will be enclosed with chain-link construction fencing after the structure is pushed in.

They also said they had been told people had an opportunity to retrieve belongings from the surrounding buildings.

The building was build in 1892 and placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.
