The Knox County Commissioners discussed potential changes to the county’s solar ordinance during their Tuesday meeting.

The discussion centered on potential amendments and direction to the county attorney to begin drafting changes.

Commissioner Tim Ellerman raised concerns about private well protection and groundwater monitoring, suggesting pre-construction testing and periodic testing during construction.

Setbacks from homes were also discussed. Commissioner President T.J. Brink said he supports the 300-foot residential setback recommended by the Area Plan Commission. Commissioner Kellie Streeter said she is still reviewing data and comparing solar setbacks with other land uses but commented she believes the APC’s recommendations align with coal land use.

Commissioners confirmed any changes would apply only to new applications filed after revisions are adopted.

Draft language is expected to return to the agenda in April. The board also discussed a moratorium on new applications but instead favored forming a committee to review broader ordinance issues and recommend updates.
