A Chicago man is facing additional charges after authorities say he attempted to flee while being taken into custody at the Dubois County Courthouse earlier this week.

According to the Dubois County Prosecutor’s Office, 37-year-old John Richter appeared in Dubois Superior Court on Wednesday, March 4, in connection with a pending case under Cause No. 19D01-2503-F3-000260.

In that case, Richter is charged with Dealing in Methamphetamine between five and ten grams, a Level 3 felony; Possession of Methamphetamine between five and ten grams, a Level 5 felony; Unlawful Possession of a Syringe, a Level 6 felony; Possession of a Controlled Substance, a Class A misdemeanor; and Possession of Paraphernalia, a Class C misdemeanor. Court records indicate Richter previously posted a $10,000 cash-only bond on March 26, 2025.

Richter appeared in court Wednesday afternoon for a fact-finding hearing on a petition to revoke his pre-trial release that had been filed by the prosecutor’s office. At the conclusion of the hearing, Judge Anthony Quinn ordered that Richter be taken into custody and set an additional $15,000 cash-only bond.

Authorities say that while courthouse security officers were taking Richter into custody, he fled from Dubois County Courthouse security staff. Another member of the courthouse security team apprehended Richter on the first floor of the courthouse.

Multiple officers from the Jasper Police Department and the Dubois County Sheriff’s Office responded to the courthouse following the incident.

As a result of the incident, prosecutors filed additional charges of Escape, a Level 5 felony, and Resisting Law Enforcement, a Class A misdemeanor.

Richter appeared again in Dubois Superior Court on Thursday, March 5, for an initial hearing on the new charges. Judge Quinn set an additional $25,000 cash-only bond in the new case, bringing Richter’s total required cash bond to $40,000 to be released from the Dubois County Security Center.
