We all are adjusting to the one-hour difference after clocks moved forward for Daylight Saving Time this weekend.

Fire and emergency officials say the time change is a good reminder to check smoke and carbon monoxide detector batteries in homes and businesses. They also recommend replacing older alarms or installing them if they are not already in place.

Local fire officials say working smoke alarms helped alert residents to a weekend fire in Vincennes.

Firefighters from the Vincennes City and Vincennes Township Fire Departments responded to a residential fire shortly after 7 a.m. Sunday. Officials say the alarms alerted the occupants, allowing everyone inside to evacuate before crews arrived.

Firefighters extinguished the blaze after arriving on scene.

At the same time, Vincennes City, Vincennes Township, and Lawrence Allison firefighters also responded to a commercial fire alarm in the Knox County Industrial Park. After investigating, crews found no fire at that location.

Also assisting were the Knox County Sheriff’s Office, Knox County Central Dispatch, Good Samaritan EMS, and the Johnson Township Fire Department.
