Spring Energy Saving Tips

CenterPoint Energy is encouraging customers to take steps this spring to improve energy efficiency and safety as temperatures begin to rise.

The company says routine maintenance and small adjustments around the home can help reduce energy use and lower monthly bills.

One of the first recommendations is to check HVAC systems. Air conditioning can account for about half of a home’s energy use during warmer months. Cleaning or replacing air filters can help systems operate more efficiently and may reduce the need for repairs.

Customers are also advised to seal gaps around windows and doors using weatherstripping or caulk to prevent cooled air from escaping. Keeping blinds or curtains closed during peak sunlight hours can help maintain indoor temperatures.

To reduce hot water use, CenterPoint suggests installing energy-saving showerheads and faucet aerators.

The company says customers replacing appliances should consider energy-efficient models, which may qualify for rebates.

In addition, CenterPoint reminds customers to contact 811 at least three business days before starting any digging projects to avoid underground utility lines.
