Washington city leaders are reviewing a proposal for a possible data center development.

The Washington City Council heard a presentation Monday from Outrigger Industrial, which is considering a site on about 120 acres east of Interstate 69 and south of U.S. 50.

The proposed project would involve a large facility used to store data for businesses and industries. Representatives said the site could employ between 100 and 150 people.

Outrigger outlined potential utility needs, estimating electricity demand could range from about 100 megawatts to as much as one gigawatt. The company said it has been in contact with the Indiana Municipal Power Agency regarding available power.

The company is also requesting a “willing to serve” letter from the City of Washington for water and sewer service. In addition, Outrigger is asking the city to allow data centers under its zoning code.

Council members asked for projected water and sewer usage, but those estimates were not provided. Representatives also did not identify a specific business that would occupy the facility.

Council members indicated they could not move forward without more detailed information.

Outrigger was directed to submit plans to the building commissioner by April 20 in order to be considered for the May Plan Commission meeting.
