FROM INDIANA PUBLIC BROADCASTING
A law passed by Congress nearly 20 years ago officially takes full effect today. The REAL ID Act, signed by President George W. Bush in May 2005, now requires stricter identification standards for boarding commercial flights and entering certain federal buildings.
To comply, your Indiana driver’s license or state ID must have a star in the upper right corner. If it doesn’t, you’ll need to visit the BMV and bring documents that prove your identity, legal status, Social Security number, and Indiana residency.
Accepted documents include a valid passport or birth certificate, a Social Security card or W-2, and bills or statements showing your Indiana address.
If you don’t yet have a Real ID, a U.S. passport and some other forms of ID are still accepted for now.
