FROM INDIANA PUBLIC BROADCASTING

Two voter advocacy groups and an Indiana University student are suing the state over a new law banning the use of student IDs for voting. The lawsuit claims the law, signed last month, unfairly burdens young voters without justification.

Student IDs from Indiana public colleges have been accepted at polls for about 20 years. But Republican lawmakers ended that, saying only Indiana residents should vote in Indiana elections.

The plaintiffs — Count US IN, Women4Change Indiana, and IU student Josh Montagne — say the law violates the U.S. Constitution. Montagne told lawmakers the change will drive students away from the state.

Secretary of State Diego Morales defends the law, saying it ensures all voter IDs are secure.
