Former Washington Mayor Tom Baumert has died. He passed away on Sunday at the age of 83.

Baumert served as mayor for four consecutive terms from 1988 to 2003. He later returned to public service with a term on the Washington City Council. Prior to his time as mayor, he was the city’s police chief.

During his tenure, Baumert oversaw major infrastructure developments, including the construction of the U.S. 50 bypass on the city’s south side. He was also a longtime advocate for the development of Interstate 69 and worked closely with the state to maintain Business 50, which often fell into disrepair while under state control.  He worked to improve the lake at East Side Park, which was later named Baumert Lake in his honor.

Baumert was also active in supporting the city’s economic development throughout his 16 years in office.

He suffered a stroke earlier this year and had been living at Hillside Manor. Funeral arrangements are pending.
