The first human case of West Nile virus in Indiana this year has been reported in a Vanderburgh County resident.

The Indiana Department of Health says mosquitoes carrying the virus have been found in 15 counties so far, and more cases are expected as the season continues.

State Health Commissioner Dr. Lindsay Weaver urges Hoosiers to remove standing water and take steps to prevent mosquito bites—like using insect repellent and wearing long sleeves.

Most people infected with West Nile have no symptoms or mild flu-like illness, but some may develop serious complications affecting the brain and nervous system.

Older adults and those with weakened immune systems are at higher risk.
