Knox County residents are invited to take part in a community effort this weekend to help protect local natural areas from invasive species.

The Knox County Cooperative Invasive Species Management Area (CISMA) is hosting a volunteer workday at Sugarloaf Mound on Saturday, August 23. The event runs from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. and will focus on removing Asian Bush Honeysuckle, a plant that threatens native habitats.

Knox County CISMA is a local nonprofit organization whose mission is to minimize the impact of invasive plant species by educating the public, monitoring and removing invasives, and promoting and protecting native plants.

Volunteers will receive a short presentation on plant identification and safety before assisting staff with removal. Participants can help by hand-pulling the plants or using hand tools provided on site.

Organizers encourage volunteers to wear closed-toe shoes, long pants, and a hat, and to bring a water bottle.

Organizers say the event is open to all community members who want to make a difference in preserving Knox County’s natural environment.
