County Sheriff’s Departments and Indiana State Police have put out notices on several phone scams in the region.
The Pike County Sheriff’s Office says people are being told they missed a court date or jury duty. Scammers use public information — your name, address, even relatives — to sound convincing. Do not give personal details over the phone; call the agency directly to verify.
Indiana State Police in the Putnamville District also report threats tied to gift card payments and caller-ID spoofing. If a caller demands money or immediate action, it’s a scam. Don’t answer unknown numbers, don’t pay by bitcoin or gift cards, and if in doubt, call your local law enforcement office to confirm.
Knox County Chief Deputy John Fuller is warning of another scam that is using his name. This week, callers have posed as Chief Deputy Fuller, giving a fake citation code and demanding $6,000 be paid at a bitcoin kiosk on Washington Avenue or they’ll issue an arrest warrant. The Sheriff’s Office says they will never call and ask for money. If you get one of these calls, hang up and report it to 812-882-1502.
