32-year-old Dylan A. Smith pleaded guilty Monday to the murder of 26-year-old Taylor Hendershot.

Hendershot was shot and killed outside a 6th Street business in Vincennes on August 5th. A jury trial had been scheduled to begin this week.

A plea agreement was presented in Knox Circuit Court, where Judge Monica Gilmore accepted Smith’s guilty plea before about two dozen spectators. Smith appeared in shackles and jail clothing, answering the judge’s questions directly and confirming he understood the plea and its consequences.

In a statement to First City News, Knox County Prosecutor Dirk Carnahan said no plea was offered by the state. Instead, Smith—through his attorney—offered to plead guilty, waive all appeals, and waive any future sentence modification requests in exchange for a 60-year sentence. Carnahan said he met with the victim’s family, who supported the agreement and asked that he accept it.

Smith pleaded guilty to felony murder. Judge Gilmore set sentencing for January 9th and told members of the Hendershot family, several of whom were present, that they may speak at that hearing if they wish.
