Vincennes City Council Met on Monday

The Vincennes City Council moved forward on one business incentive Monday while deciding to end discussion on a separate public safety issue.

Council members gave preliminary approval to a five-year tax abatement for Ewing Printing as the company plans to invest roughly $800,000 in new printing equipment. City officials said the request had been reviewed previously, but Monday’s action allowed the council to consider the company’s full abatement schedule.

The move comes at a time when Indiana’s business personal property tax structure is shifting. The state is raising the exemption threshold from $80,000 to $2 million, meaning many small and mid-sized equipment purchases would no longer be taxable in the future. Council members noted that if Ewing did not apply before the change takes effect, the company could lose the opportunity to secure the abatement under current rules. Representatives from Ewing attended the meeting to answer any remaining questions as the council advanced the preliminary resolution. A public hearing will be held later before final approval is granted.

In other business, the council’s Public Safety Committee recommended no further action on allowing side-by-side vehicles on city streets. Committee Chair John Stangle said only one person attended a recent public meeting to speak in favor of the idea, and with little public interest, the committee suggested ending the discussion.
