
Lee Hamilton has died. He was 94.
Hamilton served southern Indiana in the U.S. House of Representatives for more than three decades. He represented Indiana’s Ninth Congressional District from 1965 until his retirement in 1999.
During his time in Congress, Hamilton played key roles in national investigations. He was vice chair of the commission that reviewed the September 11th terrorist attacks and led the House committee that examined covert arms sales involving Iran.
After leaving Congress, Hamilton continued working in public service. In 2015, he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Barack Obama.
Hamilton also maintained a long relationship with Indiana University. He earned his law degree there in 1956. The university’s Hamilton Lugar School of Global and International Studies bears his name, and IU holds his congressional records. He also helped establish what later became the Center on Representative Government.
Hamilton was born April 30th, 1931, in Daytona Beach, Florida. He was raised in Evansville and earned his undergraduate degree from DePauw University, where he played basketball.
Hamilton’s career spanned domestic and international policy work in Congress.
