The warmer temps and melting snow have folks thinking more about spring. But with spring comes its own weather events. State and local emergency management officials are asking residents to begin thinking and preparing for possible spring flooding incidents.
Officials say preparation starts before water rises. They recommend families develop an emergency plan, including evacuation routes, a communication strategy, and a designated meeting place. Residents are also encouraged to assemble an emergency kit with essentials such as drinking water, non-perishable food, medications, important documents, and a flashlight.
During flooding, officials stress that people should follow evacuation orders immediately and move to higher ground if directed. They warn that even shallow floodwaters can be dangerous and advise avoiding moving water whenever possible.
After flooding, residents are urged to stay informed through local updates and only return home once authorities say it is safe. Officials also caution that flood damage can include hidden hazards such as debris, downed power lines, or contaminated water.
