The body of a man missing in Martin County floodwaters has been recovered.
Indiana Conservation Officers say 82-year-old James Petty of Fortville was found inside his vehicle after it was located using sonar. Divers reached the truck Monday afternoon in about 20 feet of water and confirmed Petty had died at the scene.
The incident began Sunday, March 8, when Petty’s truck was swept off Spout Springs Road south of Shoals, near the White River, an area prone to flooding.
A passenger escaped through a window, held onto a tree vine, and called 911. Rescue crews launched a boat and brought that person to safety.
Officials say strong, fast-moving water made search efforts difficult.
Multiple agencies assisted in the response.
