The community has been sharing memories of Howard Hatcher online since his death was reported Saturday, March 21st.
He was 82.
Hatcher spent decades in public service in Vincennes and Knox County. He joined the Vincennes Police Department in 1965 at age 21 and served more than 30 years, rising to the rank of major. He later served one term as mayor of Vincennes.
Community members have been posting memories online, describing his long involvement in public safety and local government. One post described him as someone who focused on helping people who were struggling and stayed connected to the community throughout his career.
Following his time in city government, Hatcher continued working in public safety. He served as Emergency Preparedness Coordinator with the Knox County Health Department, helping plan for disaster response and public health emergencies. Local officials have credited that work with helping guide preparations used during the COVID-19 pandemic.
In a November 2024 story in the Vincennes Sun Commercial, reporter Jenny McNeece documented Hatcher’s life and included his reflections on service and health later in life.
“It’s always about the people,” Hatcher said, describing how he kept a list of individuals he prayed for and remained focused on others even after stepping away from public roles.
Funeral arrangements have not yet been announced.
