The Knox County Prosecutor is addressing misinformation surrounding a recent investigation involving a dog.
In a statement posted on social media, Prosecuting Attorney Dirk Carnahan says false claims have circulated online about the condition of the animal and how the case was handled.
According to the prosecutor’s office, a sheriff’s deputy found the dog in a malnourished and dehydrated state and took it to a local facility. The Knox County Sheriff’s Department, along with the Indiana State Veterinarian, conducted an investigation.
Carnahan says evidence showed the dog had been well cared for before it went missing from its home on March 14. The family reported searching for the dog, and one parent stayed behind from a planned trip to continue looking.
The dog was located about two weeks later. The state veterinarian determined the animal’s condition was consistent with being lost for that length of time and found no evidence of abuse or neglect prior to that.
Carnahan says no crime occurred, and under state law, the dog must be returned to its owners.
