Several downtown business owners addressed the Vincennes City Council Monday night with concerns about the proposed Firehouse Flats housing project.
The development was first introduced last year. In July of 2025, the Vincennes Redevelopment Commission agreed to move forward with preliminary planning, contingent on the developer securing grant funding. In recent weeks, discussions have resumed as more formal plans are put together. The project, as outlined, would include nearly 90 market-rate apartments with a mix of unit sizes and on-site parking.
Concerns expressed during Monday’s discussion concerned the parking lot near the Firemen’s Memorial at the public lot along Vigo Street. Several business owners argued that the lot is essential for downtown and cannot be abandoned.
The members of the city council stressed that no decision about the project had been made, and that the process continued being discussed at various stages.
The city council members said that detailed information about the plans will be revealed once the developers finish discussing the plans. The developers have much experience in developing projects downtown and are expected to consider residents’ opinions.
