The Indiana Department of Transportation says drivers should expect heavier traffic across the state during the Memorial Day holiday weekend, including additional congestion connected to Indianapolis 500 events.

AAA estimates more than 45 million people will travel nationwide during the holiday weekend, including more than 960,000 travelers from Indiana.

INDOT says some temporary road closures and restrictions on state highways, U.S. routes, and interstates will be lifted beginning at noon Friday where conditions allow. The agency says longer-term construction closures will remain in place through the weekend.

Construction and maintenance work is scheduled to resume Tuesday morning, according to INDOT.

The agency says drivers are likely to encounter roadway restrictions this year with more than 1,000 construction and maintenance projects planned statewide.

INDOT says most injuries and fatalities in work zones involve drivers and passengers rather than road workers.

The National Safety Council says 38 percent of fatal crashes during the 2024 Memorial Day holiday period involved an alcohol-impaired driver.

Drivers can monitor traffic conditions, closures, and restrictions through the TrafficWise app or at 511.org.
