Local leaders shared the good and the bad at the Knox County Chamber of Commerce’s State of Local Government event Wednesday

Vincennes Mayor Joe Yochum, Bicknell Mayor Thomas Estabrook and President of the County Commissioners, T.J. Brink, gave updates on current projects and priorities in their respective areas to a packed Fortnightly Club in Vincennes.

All three addressed the impact of Senate Bill 1 which passed the state legislature earlier this year. The bill decreases property tax revenue for local governments, prompting them to adjust their budgets.  Mayor Yochum said the city of Vincennes may need to cut up to $1 million from its budget.

Infrastructure improvements and ongoing development projects were also discussed.   Mayor Yochum talked about ongoing retail and housing projects.  Mayor Estabrook commented on street work and also reported that property has been acquired to be used for a new Bicknell City Hall.   Commissioner Brink said that Abraxas Youth and Family are purchasing the former youth village facility and will be utilizing it in a similar capacity.

After hearing all of the leaders’ comments, an audience member asked, in light of the pros and cons presented, what the actual state of local government is. Mayor Estabrook responded by saying they are cautiously optimistic as they move forward with current and future plans, while waiting to see exactly how Senate Bill 1 will impact those efforts.
