The South Knox Lady Spartans made history Saturday, winning the Class 2A girls basketball state championship.
It was the first state title for the school in any varsity sport. They defeated Rensselaer 55-33, holding them to a season-low score.
The community celebrated the team’s victory with a Sunday welcome-home event at the South Knox gym. Senior Bren Hill reflected on the moment, saying, “Oh, it feels amazing. It’s a little bittersweet because this is my last season with these girls, but I’m really happy I could end on a win.”
Coach Hollie Eaves, who set her sights on a state championship from the start, credited the team and their families for their commitment. “It takes kids buying into you as a coach, and it takes parents that buy into you as a coach. We really had that this year,” Eaves said.
Following their win, the team was honored at a Vincennes University basketball game before returning home to celebrate with fans.
